Rethinking Depression: FLOW Neuroscience

By: Cordelia de la Fuente

I recently had the chance to interview Daniel Månsson, co-founder of Flow Neuroscience, and his insights into the future of mental health treatment left me in awe.

INTERVIEW: Co-Founder and CCO Daniel Mansson for Inside Health, talking about the science behind the technology and entrepreneurial development of his company: FLOW Neuroscience (I’m jumping with excitement in the corner :)

Flow Neuroscience, founded by Daniel Månsson and Eric Rehn in 2016, is a revolutionary approach to one of the biggest mental health challenges of our time: depression.

The Flow device, described as “created by scientists, endorsed by doctors,” targets the physical changes that occur in the brain during depression. By sending gentle electrical impulses, no stronger than a 9V battery, the device stimulates neural activity, helping to restore healthy brain patterns and boost neuron function over time.

Flow’s technology is promising because it provides a noninvasive alternative to antidepressants. The device, available for rent or purchase, is designed for practical, long-term use. Daniel and his medical team recommend using it for 30-minute sessions, twice a week over a period of 6 to 12 months for the best results—much like a traditional antidepressant.

The best part? Users can wear the device while going about their normal activities, making it easy to incorporate into daily life.

Since its launch in 2016 in Sweden, Flow has become available in nearly every EU country, as well as the United Kingdom, Norway, and Hong Kong. It’s currently in the final round of FDA trials, raising hopes that it will soon be available for use in the United States.

The results so far are impressive: over 57% of participants in clinical studies reported significant improvement in their depression symptoms after using Flow, an INCREDIBLE success rate for a noninvasive treatment.

For me, what sets Flow apart is not just the technology but the mission behind it. During our conversation, Daniel shared how growing up near the birthplace of IKEA inspired his approach.

IKEA’s vision, “To create a better everyday life for the many people.”

shaped his vision of creating “treatment for the many people.

His goal is to make Flow accessible and affordable, not a luxury product available only to a select few.

Flow is more than just a company, it’s a movement dedicated to helping people live their best lives through the power of science and technology. If you're in Europe, you can already try Flow or recommend it to someone who might benefit.

And for those in the U.S. stay tuned…  Flow could be one of the biggest disruptors in mental health treatment yet.

Talking to Daniel about his mission and vision was incredibly inspiring. It gave me real hope that the future of mental health care is moving toward more accessible and effective solutions.

A huge thank you to Daniel Månsson for collaborating with Inside Health on this interview!
